Celebrate Grandparents Day: Help a Senior Citizen.

Grandparents Day is Sunday 9-13, 2015. While some of us are lucky enough to have grandparents, there are others who do not.  And, there are many seniors who would welcome a visit or time spent with young people.  If you have some seniors in your neighborhood who are alone, why not take the kids over for a visit? You could bring a picnic, or have some tea and cookies.  Or take a senior out for lunch or an ice cream cone.  No seniors nearby?  You and the kids can still help by contributing to one of the following organizations that benefit seniors:

  1. Meals on Wheels: One in six Americans over 60 faces the threat of hunger.  Meals on Wheels is there to help. There are chapters in all 50 states.  You can donate, or join the crew that delivers healthy food to shut ins. http://www.mowaa.org
  2.  Fund a Furry Friend:  Pets provide companionship and love to their owners. By donating to  http://www.petsfortheelderly.org  you can help a senior get a cat or dog.
  3.  Through Volunteers of America, you can assist seniors with tasks such as raking, mowing, and minor home repairs as part of their America’s Safety of Seniors Handyman Program.  http://www.voa.org
  4.  Teach Technology: You can sign up to teach older adults computer and technology skills through Senior Net.  http://www.seniornet.org
